Keflavík Open, but the Eruption is Not Ending

Today, the Keflavík airport reopened, mostly thanks to the fact the ash emission from Eyjafjallajökull has decreased considerably in the last days. Most international and domestic flights have thus been resumed.

Anyhow, less ash does not mean that the eruption is ending. After the eruption switched to a different phase, ash emission diminished and lava flow begun. The flow of the magma has remained constant until today, averaging between 20 to 40 tons per second.

This said, the ash fall that had been forecasted for the Capital Region in the past days never arrived, or if it did, it was completely unnoticeable and had no sensible effects on people or animals. We had an alternation of wonderful sunny days (albeit cold in the afternoon) and the usual Reykjavík rainy days.
