RIFF 2011 – Ciné-concert w/ Skúli Sverrisson & Sóley

RIFF organized a themed concert last Wednesday, with Icelandic music artists Skúli Sverrisson and Sóley. The concert took place in the suggestive setting of Reikjavík’s Fríkirkja, beaten by rain.

Sóley opened with a selection of songs from her latest album We Sink, which was released earlier this month. I will never tire to repeat how magical Sóley’s music is, especially live. The church’s nave echoed with the musician’s looping voice, while her figure stood in front of a screen filled with images conjured by the talented visual artist Ingibjörg Birgisdóttir.

Skúli Sverrisson performed music to When It Was Blue by Jennifer Todd Reeves. The church’s interior turned pitch black during the performance, with the only exception of the flickering screen. Skúli created with his guitar a wonderful soundscape for the captivating images that were following one another in rapid succession. Music and imagery blended in the obscurity, while the church kept still and the audience sat in complete silence. Fríkirkja’s huge windows were bathed in the eerie illumination coming from lights penetrating from the outside, offering the wandering eye a perfect complement for the show.

  1. Lovely writeup that made me feel almost like I was there. I only wish I had been! Wonderful shots, the windows and lighting……!

  2. She looks like she is having fun! Thanks for all the film reviews. Here near the U.S./Canada border there is no venue to see such films and internet access is limited on a good day. Thanks for being my cultural liaison to the world. At least when I go away I have some interesting films to seek out.

  3. The problem with venues to watch movies that are a little different than the usual is common everywhere! Thanks to the digital format though it seems things are getting a bit better and it’s easier to find places and occasions =)

  4. Yes,in Spain most of these films appears directly in dvd format, and even not for rent, only for sale.
