The following statement was issued earlier today by the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) on the main site, in relation to news concerning a possible upcoming eruption of the volcano of Bárðarbunga that were released by several media sources worldwide and that have been causing alarmed reactions in the course of the past hours.
“Presently, there are no signs of an imminent volcanic eruption in Iceland. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) did not issue a warning last weekend in connection with increased seismicity beneath the Vatnajökull ice-cap. If signs of an eruption were apparent, IMO would issue a warning immediately.”
During the previous days, experts that have been monitoring the situation in the area of the glacier of Vatnajökull in the south-east of Iceland had already expressed the opinion that at the moment it’s impossible to make an exact prediction. The possibility of an eruption does exist, but it doesn’t represent a certainty, thus there shouldn’t be reasons for immediate warnings.
