If you are in Iceland during the festive period, you may consider visiting the Jólaþorpið (Christmas Village) in Hafnarfjörður, where you will be able to buy from local artisans a variety of hand-crafted goods, from food to knitwear to Christmas decorations, with live music and entertainment every opening day.
We took a brief peek at this year’s Christmas Village yesterday and we liked its cozy atmosphere. We got to Hafnarfjörður very late though, so most of the fun had already taken place and most sellers were packing their goods and leaving. We met a little clone of Kátur — same crazy expression, same eagerness to jump on people and make friends with everybody — and we engaged in a conversation with a Polish nun who replied in Icelandic to our English remarks about the fact she had for sale the first nativity scene we have seen in Iceland. Unfortunately, I couldn’t understand if a presepio in the Christian Catholic style in Iceland is a common sight or not, but to me it looked strangely exotic among all the Santa Clauses and Yule Lads figurines on sale at other booths.
The Christmas Village is located in Hafnarfjörður downtown and it’s open every Saturday and Sunday, until Christmas. Opening hours: 13:00-18:00. For more info, please visit the official site of the city of Hafnarfjörður
