Despite the hot news regarding a possible eruption at Grímsvötn that have been circulating since the beginning of the week, triggered by detection of abnormal seismic activity in the area, here in Iceland we are already preparing for the cold. In fact, the first snow has been falling during the last days, and it definitely doesn’t feel like November at all.
Icelanders are used to snow and love it, and they clearly show it: children and their sledges are a common sight; snowmen flourish and perish by the hand of unknowns in the course of a single day; people unleash dogs, even when they’re not supposed to, to let their furry friends have a bit of out-of-the-ordinary fun; flying snowballs are everywhere.
When I was younger, I dreamed of living somewhere where Winter was covered in snow, where Christmas was all dressed in white, where cold didn’t simply mean humidity that penetrates your skin till it reaches the bone. Only once I could enjoy the merriment of a sleigh and I was genuinely envious of those depicting their wintry days as an endless feast of silvery lights and streets paved in crunchy glitter. It seems a dream at least has come true.
I’m glad to hear your dreams have been realized; Winter in Reykjavik must truly be a majestic sight.
