Are you going to be in Reykjavík later this week? If you are, you’ll be delighted to know there’s a surprise in store for you: from the 24th to the 27th of June the Midsummer Festival is going to pep up the heart of Reykjavík with a potpourri of artistic and cultural manifestations. Everybody’s invited to join the fun during this four-days gathering of some of the most promising members of the Icelandic art scene. With events ranging from live music to art exhibitions, from public readings to various happenings of other genres, everybody will have a taste of the latest trends in Iceland’s art scenario.
Celebrated for a long time as John the Baptist’s birthday (hence the name Jónsvaka, which exactly means John’s Wake), the period comprising the summer solstice, when sun never sets and day and night are one and only entity, in the latest years the midsummer festivity reinvented itself, becoming an important platform to launch and promote young talents in the lively context of Reykjavík city center.
Free admission will be granted to all art events taking place at various downtown venues. Live music shows, all taking place at NASA, will be accessible to people with tickets sold at very reasonable prices. Armbands for three-days admission to all music shows costs 2900 ISK and is purchasable at midi.is. Single-day tickets will be available at the site of the event for the price of 1500 ISK for each ticket. The list of musicians that are going to perform includes names as Seabear, Hjaltalín, For a Minor Reflection, Rökkurró and Ólafur Arnalds.
