It seems that the first passenger flights have started leaving Iceland, after this morning’s cancellations. A guy staying at our guesthouse, who had his flight cancelled this morning, was informed that the flight will leave in a few hours. You can follow the departures and arrivals at the Keflavik airport’s website (in English).
Meanwhile, new details are emerging about the eruption. As reported by the always excellent IcelandReview.com, according to geophysicists, the eruption could last anything between a few days to a couple of years. This very useful prediction is justified also by the crazy winds in the area (and in most of Iceland, actually: I can hear the window rattling as I write) which could help the eruption develop in unexpected ways.
Only people with good reasons, like farmers in need of feeding their animals, have been re-allowed entrance to the closed area around the eruption.
New videos and images are surfacing the Internet.
Videos of the famous 1970 eruption in Iceland are also gaining popularity. Thankfully, the current eruption seems to be on a very different scale.
